Who Was John Lindsay?

  • Early Life
  • In Congress
  • Running for Mayor

In 1965, Congressman John V. Lindsay, from New York's Upper East Side "Silk Stocking District," ran for mayor of New York City by promising change—change from what he characterized as the clubhouse politics of the Democratic Party, change in renewing a city in crisis, and change in addressing the problems of the inner city. His campaign harnessed the energy and excitement of thousands of volunteers, who were energized by the prospect of a new role for government. Who was this candidate, and how did he win election on the Republican and Liberal Party tickets in this overwhelmingly Democratic city?
